Important news confirming that in-form, Alejandro Valverde, has taken 3rd place in the Dutch classic: Amstel Gold Race.
Part of the small group which successfully broke away from the main pack, with 20km to go, the Spanish cyclist of the Caisse d'Espargne team completed the race in a sprint with Damiano Cunego and Frank Schleck.
More than satisfied with his result, Valverde declared at the end of the race: “Every year I am getting better, this is my best result in this race. I was in a good position behind the wheel of Rebellin, but I am not in the same shape I was in previous years, and when I realised that Cunego and Schleck had gained a few metres, I didn’t have the strength to catch them. I will see how I feel in the next few days for the Fleche Wallonne and Sunday for the Leige-Bastogne-Liege. I need to be in perfect condition to win that race; I repeat that this year my preparation has been different as my main objective has been the Tour de France. In any case, if I am in form, I will try myself or one of my team mates. At this moment, there is also Joaquim Rodriguez, who worked hard to help me today, he’s able to achieve great results for the Mur de Huy”
