Italian disabled rider cyclist-he lost a leg when he was young- opened the 2002 Giro d'Italia, riding the course of the prologue time trial which was used to award the first pink jersey of the Giro. Macchi set a time of 10'53" using a special Pinarello frame custom made for him by the italian frame builder.
